SaveArtSpace is proud to present Black Whimsy, a public art exhibition on billboard ad space in New York, NY, opening October 16, 2026, curated by Adesewa Adekoya.

The Black Whimsy selected artist is Sky Walker.

What happens when Black imagination has no limits? Black Whimsy explores the ethereal, fantastical, and otherworldly possibilities of Black life, imagination and creativity across the diaspora. This open call invites artists to imagine the many worlds, surreal and dreamlike, in which Black people can exist. It encourages artists to uncover their deepest creative desires and to escape reality for the time being.

Opening October 16, 2026, SaveArtSpace will launch a public art installation for the selected artwork on billboard ad space in New York, NY. The public art will be on view for at least four weeks. Billboard location announced on September 28, 2026.

Selected Artist

Skylar “Sky” Walker is a Black American paper collage artist from Atlanta, GA and currently based in Brooklyn, NY. She is a research-based artist who translates research on Black history, culture, and futures into worlds that she creates and honors. Her collage work traverses into fantastical realms of self-exploration and liberation, opening a space where the self attunes to the world around us. Through natural and cosmic imagery, she considers liberating Blackness as interwoven with the natural world. As you traverse through the portals of her work, time collapses and her imagination becomes but a memory of the future. Her work is an ode to history, honoring those who paved the way, while also a visualization of a future, glimpsing into a world where paths toward freedom unfold across space and time. During her career, she has been a 2023 Institute for Diversity in the Arts Fellow and a 2024 Lyric McHenry Fellow. She has also exhibited work internationally; From the Bay Area to New York to the Netherlands, her work has been featured in Good Mother Studio, SOMArts Center, BarBario, and the Harlem Fine Arts Show.

Curator

Adesewa Adekoya is a New York–based digital illustrator who explores Black whimsy in their work through portraiture. Their work imagines soft, expressive worlds where Black life is rooted in ethereality, surrealism and playfulness. Their work is greatly influenced by black beauty and the black artists that have come before them, they wish to inspire other black creatives that come after them. Adesewa graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology where they received their BFA in illustration. They have gone on to work with clients such as Netflix, Hulu, and Columbia Records.

Founded in 2015, SaveArtSpace is a non-profit organization that works to create an urban gallery experience, launching exhibitions that address intersectional themes and foster a message of social change that benefits the working class.
